Pictures by August Sander (1876-1964) are highly traded on the international art market. August Sander took his famous portraits of farmers in the Westerwald in the 1920s. Many people there remember him and have pictures he took back then in their drawers and attics. Hommage à August Sander reports on encounters with Sander's pictures, is an impression and a search for the traces he left behind. The film attempts to reconstruct the special relationships that existed between the people of the Westerwald and the photographer.

Pavel Schnabel
Pavel Schnabel was born in Olomouc (Czechoslovakia) and grew up in Liberec (Reichenberg) in northern Bohemia. He studied at the Film and Television Academy in Prague (FAMU), emigrated in 1968 and has since worked as a freelance cameraman, director and producer in the Federal Republic of Germany. Pavel Schnabel has received several awards for his films at international film festivals.
